The festival was established by Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre in 2014 in collaboration with a committee of organisations and educational institutions committed to the design arts and creative industries in Canberra. They include the Australian National University, University of Canberra, Australian Institute of Architects, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, Australian Graphic Design Association and Harris Hobbs Landscape Architecture.
Design Canberra has established itself as the national capital’s premiere design event and in 2016 features 100+ events over a month-long program, from 27 October to 25 November.
Design is essential to Canberra, from Walter and Marion Griffin’s city design a century ago to its emergence as Australia’s cool little capital in recent times. Design and innovation continues to shape Canberra’s identity and progress as a smart city in the 21st century.
